Used for thousands of years to add taste to food and as a preservative, salt is a very valuable part of our diet. Further, although many people in the West simply take it for granted, in many countries it is a vital economic commodity and many older readers will no doubt remember the part played by salt in bringing British rule in India to and end in the middle of the last century.

Regrettably however salt can also be a significant contributory factor when it comes to the problem of high blood pressure.

Salt is in fact a compound composed of sodium and chloride and when it comes to hypertension it is the quantity of sodium that we consume that needs to be watched.

It might seem that controlling your intake of salt is just a question of restricting the amount of salt which you put into food while you are cooking and which you add to your food at the table. However, the real problem lies in the fact that most of the salt which we consume is found in the processed foods which nearly all of us consume every day.

To ensure that you minimize the risk of hypertension you need to keep your intake of salt under the recommended daily sodium intake figure of 2,400 milligrams and so here are a few tips to assist you to do just that:

Remove salt from your dining table. If you are eating a properly balanced diet your food will contain sufficient salt without any need to add more while you are eating, so simply remove the salt from the table.

Learn to read food labels. Food labeling laws have been greatly improved in recent years and almost all foods now carry nutritional information which includes the amount of sodium which the food contains. You have to read the labels carefully though as often the sodium figure will apply to the whole tin or pack and sometimes it will apply to an individual serving.

Purchase sodium free or low sodium products. Many foods these days come in sodium free or low sodium options and, whenever possible, you need to pick these rather than the regular product.

Pick low salt snacks. Most people enjoy snacking but try to choose such things as vegetable and fruit and, if you feel that you cannot live without those crisps then buy varieties that are low in sodium or salt free.

Watching your salt consumption is of course only one part of creating a diet that is good for your blood pressure and you should also look at picking items from the wide range of foods to lower blood pressure.

How To Reduce Your Blood Pressure Naturally

October 17th, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

If you suffer from high blood pressure, you obviously need to do something about it.

But does that mean that you’re condemned to taking pills and potions for the rest of your life?

It may surprise you but the answer to that question is acually “no”.

Fortunately there are some natural ways that you can use to reduce your blood pressure without popping all sorts of pills.

As a first step, if you are normally stressed out then it’s highly recommended that you investigate a program to reduce the stress you’re suffering from. Personally, I recommend meditating to reduce your stress levels - it’s simple and has been scientifically shown to help reduce stress.

Then, take a look at your diet. If you’re always snacking and eating fast food then changing your diet should be high up on your priority list. If you’re one of the many people who aren’t yet eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis, modify your eating habits. And don’t just think that devouring a packet of potato chips counts as one your vegetable portions! Plus, although drinking juice is easier, you’ll get more benefit from eating the actual fruit or vegetable - raw or cooked.

Cut down on your salt intake. Do this gradually, so you won’t notice it as much. If your salt intake is too high, that’s not good. But beware the trap some people fall into of buying a lower salt option and then sprinkling more salt over it! If the products you buy have a nutrition label, remember that salt can also be referred to as sodium but the figure for this is around half the actual salt in the product.

Cut down on life’s “pleasures” such as coffee, alcohol and smoking. You don’t necessarily have to give these up completely - unless your doctor has told you to - but it’s definitely worth cutting them down.

Get hold of a specific program to reduce your blood pressure such as this one.

Learn To Control Your Blood Pressure

October 13th, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

normal range blood pressure

For controlling your normal range blood pressure, there are two effective yoga exercises that helps lower the blood pressure:

Inverted Yoga

The gravity on the body is reversed with Inverted yoga. The most profound changes brought about by Inverted Yoga is in circulation. In inverted poses, legs and abdomen are placed higher than the heart.

Lengthening up through the legs and keep them very active so your spine opens and the entire body actively involved in the pose.

The cause is simply due to the force of gravity when reversed and venous return is much greater.

Normally, the muscles of the calf and other skeletal muscles in the lower extremities must contract in order to pump unoxygenated blood and waste back to the heart through the veins.

In inverted poses, gravity causes the blood to flow easily back through the veins and this brings the low heart rate high blood pressure in the feet to a minimum. This in effect gives skeletal muscles a chance to rest.

In Inverted poses, drainage of blood and waste from the lower body back to the heart is increased and disorders such as varicose veins and swollen ankles are relieved.

Rhythmic Breathing

We must learn about breathing techniques, as exhaling and inhaing calms the mind and nourishes the body.

Not just any old breathing will do. If you’re like most people, you take shallow breaths, pull in your stomach when you inhale and never empty your lungs of carbon dioxide when you exhale.

Here’s the physiological explanation: Long, slow breaths are more efficient than short, fast ones.

To take in a good breath, your lungs must first be basically empty. Thus the key to efficient breathing lies in exhaling completely. A full exhalation begins with the upper chest, proceeds to the middle chest and finishes with tightening the abdominal muscles.

After exhaling expect to draw in a deep breath of rich oxygen to nourish your cells.

Diabetes Control Solutions Are Very Possible

October 12th, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

After being diagnosed with diabetes, there

will be a lot of things to think about, doctor’s orders that you must learn, and

new health care equipment to wrap your head

around. Giving yourself needles can cause great fear, not to mention having to learn about new dietary restrictions. Your peace of mind will be disturbed, but there are paths you can take to

come up wth diabetes control solutions and make living with diabetes a little less stressful.

Try not to stress. Stress has an adverse

effect your blood sugar and panicking only compounds the

situation. Stay relaxed, and in control. Request precise instructions on how to keep your diabetes under control can

also be advantageous. Ask him or her to include directions

on diabetic menu, medication, home blood sugar testing, and any other items you might

require.  Interrogate those in charge of your care. Don’t

assume anything as assumptions can lead down a bad

path!

Adhere to your health care provider’s directives  by going to

your appointments, making sure you take your medicine on time, keep your blood sugar levels in check and follow all directives, including those from ancillary specialists. If you ever feel your concerns aren’t being addressed, feel free to consult another doctor.

Get an eye exam as soon as possible.Going blind can occur when you have diabetes. Schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist or optometrist who specializes in diabetic care. They can give you different glaucoma treatment options.  Keeping your blood sugar under control, after diagnosis, will lessen the chances of any serious damage to your sight. get a cholesterol exam so that you can mitigate future problems. Diabetic nutrition can be tricky but it is manageable. If you need help with your diet consult a nutritional specialist. The right diet could be even better than medicine. Contact a dietician who has diabetics as a specialization.

Keep an eye on your feet as it is possible that diabetes can damage the nerves in your feet making it difficult for sores to get better. Examine feet every day to make sure there is no redness, numbness, pain, cracking or any other type of discomfort.

Keep your blood pressure under control as complications resulting from high blood pressure include congestive heart failure and heart

disease. You can also start a weight loss program as this

will also be helpful. Overweight individuals can have more severe diabetes

with added complications.

Be sure to get an influenza vaccine as your immune system can be affected by diabetes.  Obtaining pneumonia, influenza, and/or hepatitis

B vaccinations is highly recommended.

Be sure you monitor your cholesterol so that you can

maintain your cholesterol at good levels to help avoid future complications. Stay away from the candy, we all love

our sweets, however sugar and carbohydrates have an adverse effect on blood sugar levels.

Maintaining a relatively sugar-free diet combined with regular exercise can be a great combination. Diabetic health can be a

hard thing to maintain but try to have at a minimum thirty minutes of daily exercise.

Walking is a great start and besides being fun anyone can do it.

Support groups can be a great help so join one if you can. The

experiences of others can be a great encouragement and help you

realize that you are not alone. They can help you to be strong! If you make a commitment to

control your diabetes, living as a diabetic will become easier. In no time at all, will be a

normal part of your life and you will adapt.
